OMNI College is a Designated Learning Institution

June 06, 2014

JUNE 16, 2014 – OMNI College is pleased to announce that it has qualified as a Designated Learning Institution by the Government of Canada

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA – Earlier this month on June 1, 2014, the Government of Canada released the new International Student Program (ISP), and OMNI College has qualified as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) under this program. The main purpose of this new ISP is to protect the integrity and reputation of Canada’s high-quality education systems. As of June 1, 2014, study permits will only be granted to international students who have obtained a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution, such as OMNI College.

Further, this new ISP allows full-time students enrolled in eligible programs at Designated Learning Institutions to work part-time during studies and full-time during scheduled breaks without a work permit. The Government of Canada’s website states:”Study permit holders in Canada may gain work experience by working off campus while completing their studies.

As of June 1, 2014, you may qualify to work off campus without a work permit. If you qualify, your study permit will allow you to work up to 20 hours per week:

  • during regular academic sessions and
  • full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break.

To qualify, you must:

  • have a valid study permit,
  • be a full-time student,
  • be enrolled at a designated learning institution at the post-secondary level or, in Quebec, a vocational program at the secondary level, and
  • be studying in an academic, vocational or professional training program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least six months in duration.

This is great news for international students enrolling in the Canadian Nursing Review programs at OMNI College as 100% of the students at OMNI are internationally-educated nurses (IEN).  These IENs often come from developing countries where nurses earn far less money than their Canadian counterparts.  Before this ISP, students applying to OMNI College had to find the finances to support themselves through an entire year-long program with no income, in a city where the cost of living is one of the highest in the world. This presented a tremendous barrier for many prospective students interested in pursuing nursing in Canada.   Under the rules of the new ISP, students will now have the opportunity to work and earn some extra money to help support themselves during their studies.Prospective students who are applying to OMNI College after June 1, 2014 must include OMNI’s DLI number on their application for a study permit. This number is DLI# O1934743900 For more information regarding the new International Student Program, please see Citizenship & Immigration Canada’s website:http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/student.asp
