Health Care Aide Certificate Program
Overview
The Health Care Aide Certificate Program prepares students to assist
people of varying ages who are confined to a health care facility or
their home in meeting their basic physical, emotional and social needs.
It is designed to prepare students to provide health care to the ill
or disabled and to perform particular tasks essential to their well-being.
Graduates of OMNI’s Health Care Aide Program
receive a Certificate from OMNI College. Our graduates are competing
successfully for Health Care Aide positions throughout Canada.
Who the Program is for
Have you been thinking of developing a career in healthcare but did not
know where to start? As a Health Care Aide, you do not need any prior
healthcare experience. Once you have been certified as a Health Care
Aide, there are a variety of health care positions that you will be
qualified for. Some examples are Resident Care Aide, Nurse Aide, Hospital
Porter, Long-Term Care Aide, Personal Care Assistant, etc. These are
only a few of the opportunities that will open up to you as a certified
Health Care Aide.

Our Instructors
Our instructors bring a wealth of education and experience into the classroom.
They themselves are Canadian Registered Nurses with a combined total
of 125 years of experience working in hospitals and care facilities
in Canada. Our instructional staff and supervisors are regarded as
the most valuable assets to the College as they are ultimately responsible
for the quality of education of our students, leading them to practice
safe and job-ready skills for the workplace. OMNI’s instructors
have consistently gained the respect and admiration of both the students
as well as fellow staff members.
Program Outline
The program consists of 2 parts:
Classroom and Campus Laboratory Training
Classroom lessons will focus on topics such as communication, nutrition,
behavior, the needs of the elderly, and the study of common health problems
and illnesses associated with long-term care. Laboratory sessions will
cover specific health care tasks, body mechanics, lifts and transfers,
as well as CPR and First Aid Courses.
The Practicum
The practicum includes an intensive 3-week clinical practice, providing
the student with hands-on experience in nursing homes, group homes, hospitals
and/or long term care facilities. In addition to these 3-weeks, students
from the Health Care Aide Program are also assigned weekly on-the-job
sessions at nursing or group homes and health-care facilities as part
of their training. The total time spent on applied practicum is approximately
6 weeks.
The program also includes sessions in employment readiness and covers
topics such as resume writing, interview skills and job search techniques.

Admission Requirements
In order to enroll in OMNI’s Health Care Aide Program, you must
meet the following criteria:
- Be a minimum 19 years of age
- Hold Grade 10 Education or equivalent
- Demonstrate an ability to write and speak English through
a personal interview with the OMNI Admissions Department
- Pass a personal interview with the OMNI Admissions Department
- Provide proof of a recently obtained TB test showing a negative
result
- Provide a copy of your clear Criminal Record Check from your
country of residence
Program Length and Fees
16 weeks full time,
(including a combined total of 6-weeks practicum)
Classroom and Campus Laboratory Training—
13 weeks, the Practicum —a
total of 6 weeks
Program Tuition: $3,600
(there is a non-refundable application fee due at the time of application.
For local students, the application fee is $100. For international students
the application fee is $200)
Fees may be paid by Visa, Mastercard, cash, money order,
certified cheque or wire transfer. Fees are subject to change. Textbooks
and materials are additional. While the College makes every effort to
source its textbooks and material at competitive prices, students who
wish to purchase these items on their own can do so anywhere as long
as they are identical to the ones specified in the course outline.
